Belle Isle Dam

MS students visit Belle Isle Dam

Middle Schoolers recently trekked from GSES to the Belle Isle Dam to learn about hydropower. Originally constructed in 1905, the Belle Isle Dam directed water into the Power Canal, which provided hydropower to industry in the area for more than a century. The Belle Isle Dam is part of a much larger system of dams, including Hollywood Dam and Belle Isle North Dam, which stretches across the James River, below Hollywood Cemetery. Students were able to see for themselves the powerful and rapid descent of the river at Belle Isle, as well as the remnants of Richmond's hydroelectric history.
