Place-Based Education

Place-based education is the process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to teach concepts in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, technology and other subjects across the curriculum. Emphasizing hands-on, real world learning experiences, this approach to education increases academic achievement, develops strong ties to the community, enhances appreciation and understanding of the natural world, creates an ethic of stewardship, and a commitment to serving as active, contributing citizens. Our location in the Forest Hill Neighborhood, walking distance to the James River, Forest Hill Park, and local businesses, provides endless opportunities and access to place-based education.

Place-based education and our Outdoor Education program go hand-in-hand with the students' experiences at Forest Hill Park. These students took a walk to Forest Hill Park to learn how to catch fish in the little lake.

Given the school's central location, students can walk to many locations that supplement and bring value to what they learn in class. Here, they are seen outside of a local bakery, Tablespoons, which serves as a training program for young adults with developmental disabilities.

Middle schoolers visited the SPCA after completing research projects on their favorite dog breeds.
